|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 5:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating until September 29, 2022

SOLD OUT

September 7, 14, 21, & 28 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm

Upcycling, slow-stitching, quilting, painting, oh my! Students will learn how to upcycle fabric scraps into abstract fiber art pieces by utilizing a variety of traditional handiwork techniques. This class will bend and push traditional techniques and inspire abstract, free flowing projects. Students are encouraged to upcycle by locating materials for the class at home and/or at thrift stores. Each student will create one or more small fiber art compositions. Supply list located at artcentereast.org/calendar.

Teaching Artist: Shannon Hunt

Shannon Hunt is an artist who began exploring fiber arts with machine sewing and traditional hand-quilting. Her studies in costume design at Eastern Oregon University expanded her interest in working with fibers. She will begin an M.F.A. in Visual Arts at Maharishi International University this fall.

Cost: $80 Member / $96 Non-Member

(Youth Scholarships Available)

Virtual: Zoom

Supplies: Students are encouraged to find supplies at home and/or at thrift stores.

  • Fabric scraps or pieces (at least two different fabrics): woven fabrics work best (e.g., quilting cotton, muslin, old denim or dress shirts that you don’t mind cutting up). Knit fabrics like t-shirt material and jersey are not recommended.
  • Yarn: wool is preferred but acrylic will do
  • Paint or permanent markers: acrylic or fabric paints work best
  • Sewing needles (inexpensive set on Amazon: https://a.co/d/4LmsLlZ)
  • Thread: all-purpose 50 wt thread. Polyester thread is fine and easily found in the sewing section of large stores. If available, heavier weight threads are welcome, too.
  • Thimble
  • Scissors
  • Fabric pins
  • Optional: seam ripper, wool roving, fabric marker, hoop, stamps, and embellishments such as buttons, beads, charms, found objects.
