ACE Writing Project Featuring James Benton
February 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The ACE Writing Project hosts monthly author readings. Enjoy an evening of literary arts and learn about the talent hiding in our backyard! Following the featured read- ing, we’ll open the floor to anyone interested in sharing an original piece. Writers of all genres are welcome; open mic sign-up starts at 6:45 pm on a first-come basis (limit 10 readers per night). Please keep your reading under 5 minutes. Enter through the Penn Avenue door.
Featured Reader: James Benton
Benton will read from his book of poems, “Sailor,” and from a forthcoming title, “The Book of Sympathetic Magic.”
Sailor has its origins in the six years Benton spent in the Navy at the end of the Vietnam war and how the experiences there have framed his relationship with the world since. While the poems do not deal with combat directly, they seek to trace how the formative events of one’s life influence or inform later experiences.
After leaving the Navy, Benton worked in a series of professions, including, among others, shipyard electrician, debt collections, credit card security, and private investigations before returning to college to finish a degree he began in 1982. He graduated from Eastern Oregon University with a degree in English Writing, and went on to earn an MA in Creative Writing from Cal State Sacramento. He currently teaches English Writing and Integrative Studies at EOU and is also a graduate of Eastern’s low residency MFA program.
