An event every week that begins at 3:00 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, repeating until December 21, 2024
After School Art Program (Grades K-5)
October 7 – December 20: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 3:00 – 5:15 pm (pick-up no later than 5:30 pm)
Students will enjoy their afternoons with fellow student artists as they embark on journeys of art exploration and creation. No art experience required! Each week, Teaching Artist Samantha introduces an art concept that helps children discover their artistic abilities, hone their skills, and gain an awareness of their artistic choices. Each student will create and take home a piece of art each week. Instruction topics include lines, shapes, and depth; art mediums include pencils, oil pastels, watercolors, tempera paints, markers, and more. Please note: class finishes promptly at 5:15 pm. The latest time students may be picked up is 5:30 pm.
Students may sign up for one week at a time, but they may want to register for the entire quarter given that Samantha has been hard at work planning lessons that build on each other. Sequential lessons can assist students in gaining a strong foundation for art appreciation and understanding. All supplies included. Please enter through the 5th Street door.
Teaching Artist: Samantha Adams Choate
Samantha Adams Choate grew up in Eastern Oregon and found a passion for teaching art at Painted Sky Center for the Arts in John Day, Oregon, in the Center’s after school program. She enjoys teaching youth about the importance of art, giving them tools and skills to use various forms of art as outlets for expression. Sam believes art fosters a creative and expressive mindset that encourages self-discovery, confidence, and self-worth. She is an advocate for youth opportunities in the arts as schools continue to encounter budgetary constraints that affect specialty classes. She provides students a safe place to make art and explore their creative abilities.
