Back by Popular Demand! Whether you’ve been painting for a month or several years, you know this: color is complicated. Join us to learn the ins and outs of color mixing for painters. Open to acrylic, watercolor, and oil painters, experienced or beginning (and, just so ya know, newbies become a painter by signing up for this class!). Have you wondered how to mix a specific color? What colors you can’t mix? How to gray a bright color? How to use a color wheel? This fun & informative class is for you!
Teaching Artist: Jan Clark

Bio: Jan Clark started painting in 1973 and has taken many workshops with well known artists since then. She works in oils, watercolor, acrylics, and pastels and loves experimenting with collage and mixed media.
PAINT – Please bring all of your tubes of paint. This is a good opportunity to buy colors you would like to add to your palette. You should have at least a few blues and a few yellows (yellow ochre, raw sienna, and quinacridone gold – all count as yellows), as well as at least one or two shades of red in your palette.
SUGGESTIONS – (watercolor) Winsor Red, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Neutral Tint, Paynes Gray, Indigo, Winsor Blue, Ultramarine Blue, New Gamboge, Raw Sienna, Yellow Ochre, Purple Lake, Violet (Thalo) Purple, Viridian Green.
FOR WATERCOLOR PAINTERS OR ACRYLIC PAINTERS –
- Brushes: ¾” flat watercolor brush works the best for what we will be doing.
- Paper – 140# (the best) WATERCOLOR TABLET OR 90# watercolor tablet (we will cut them to size: 8 ½” X 11.”)
- paper towels
- old hand towel
- water container
- a standard loose leaf notebook (holds paper 8 ½” X 11”, 1 ½” binding)
- color wheels – please bring all that you have
- one or two color photos you would like to practice matching the colors on
- pencil & eraser
- plastic wrap
- salt (Kosher if you have it)
- watercolor pencils – please bring what you have
- PAPER OR LOOSE CANVAS – if you use watercolor paper, you will need to prepare it before class by applying gesso to both sides of the paper. OR you can use loose canvas from a roll that is already gessoed. We will cut it into 8 ½” X 11” sheets
- a1” flat brush
- roll of plastic wrap
- palette knife
- paper towels
- clean odorless paint thinner
- standard loose leaf notebook (holds paper 8 ½” X 11”, 1 ½” binding)
HOMEWORK – optional! If you would like to do some of the preparations at home, here is what you can do: Cut your paper or canvas into 8 ½” X 11” sheets (how many you will need depends on how much paint you have.) Keep the extra strips for scraps on which to practice. If you have a three-ring hole puncher, punch the holes in your paper. If you want to come a little early to get started on them, we will have all of the required cutters and punches in the classroom.
PLEASE NOTE – Please be sure to arrive about 15 minutes early to set up your workstation.
Lunch Break: We will break for lunch from noon to 1pm. You may bring your lunch or go out to eat.

Registration cancellations & transfers must be made through Art Center East at (541) 624-2800 48 hours or more before the class start time. We cannot issue refunds or transfers for cancellations received after the 48-hour cutoff. Exceptions will be considered for medical or family emergencies. ACE will honor a refund, minus a $10 administration fee when the cancellation is made 48 hours or more before class start date. When a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will issue a refund for all registration fees. ACE will contact you in the event of a cancellation.
