Unearthed: EOU Junior Exhibit

April 5, 2019 - April 27, 2019

Free

The annual EOU Junior Art Exhibition this year is titled Unearthed. Seven EOU students are presenting pieces for the event: Mariela Caldera, Hannah Flower, Christina Gillis Nunez, Meredith Matthews, Alexander Navarro, Hannah Smith, and Olivia Starks.

The exhibition will cover impressive thematic and stylistic territory. Matthews, for example, converts collages to duralar and paper to create self-portraits that, as she explains in an artist statement, “invite the viewer into my own internal landscape.”

“Once combined with birds,” she says, “my self-portraits become disturbing and ambiguous, and seek to capture both the potential of the body and its infinite capacity for self-destruction.”

Navarro’s passion, meanwhile—inspired by such influences as Jeff Wall and Gregory Crewdson—is “staging photographs and making them appear painterly.” Navarro says, “The goal of my work is quite simply to use juxtapositional elements to create beautiful, technically sound, and unique photographs.”

An “ache for adventure” informs Caldera’s vivid paintings. “Driven by my wanderlust,” she writes, “I pack highly saturated and dynamic colors to convey the pleasure and sense of freedom that accompanies me when I travel.”

And Starks’ photographs evoke “beauty, pain, reality, personality, and vulnerability” via the human figure. “The aim of my most recent series,” she explains, “is in reference to intimate interaction and individuality. It is my hope that by witnessing my photographs, the viewer will share a moment with the subject in the photograph.”
