Continue exploring the drumming rhythms of traditional West African music in this fun Tuesday evening class! Expand your skills on the djembe – the famous goblet-shaped drum played with bare hands – as part of this lively group. This term the class is open to participants who already have some African hand drumming experience. Drums are provided.
Instructor: Ty Bowen
Ty Bowen was raised in Elgin and saw the Eastern Oregon University West African Hand Drum Ensemble perform at his school when he was in third grade. He decided then that he would try it out when he got to college. While studying history at EOU, Ty took beginning and then advanced West African Hand Drum classes in 2016 with EOU Music Department faculty member Luke McKern. Ty joined the ACE Community African Drumming group after he graduated, and he continues to have the honor and privilege of playing in the EOU West African Hand Drum Ensemble.

Registration cancellations & transfers must be made through Art Center East at (541) 624-2800 48 hours or more before the class start time. We cannot issue refunds or transfers for cancellations received after the 48-hour cutoff. Exceptions will be considered for medical or family emergencies. ACE will honor a refund, minus a $10 administration fee when the cancellation is made 48 hours or more before class start date. When a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will issue a refund for all registration fees. ACE will contact you in the event of a cancellation. Face coverings will be required in accordance with statewide regulations current at the time.
