January 11 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm
Join this fun, hands-on class to learn the basics of baking with sourdough! No previous baking experience necessary. Teaching Artist Mollie will demonstrate each step of baking an artisan sourdough boule (round loaf) while a loaf bakes in the oven. She’ll have all stages of dough prepared ahead of time so you can see the entire process within the two-hour class. Mollie will discuss sourdough baking techniques (such as mixing, stretching, proving, scoring, etc.), taking care of a sourdough starter, and the timing of sourdough baking. You’ll have the opportunity to feed a starter and help Mollie mix and shape some dough. At the end of class, you’ll take home a basic sourdough boule recipe and some troubleshooting information. You can also take your own starter, if you want or need one. “Introduction to Sourdough” will give you the inspiration and confidence to bake at home!
Teaching Artist: Mollie Baum

Mollie Baum is a lifelong Eastern Oregonian. After leaving her job as an elementary music educator to spend more time at home with her family, she started a cottage bakery as a way to stay connected with her community and try out a new creative path. She has been baking bread for family and friends since her Oma taught her to bake cinnamon rolls over a decade ago. Mollie’s passion in the baking world is bread and she loves using fresh, local, high-quality ingredients. She enjoyed being a part of the La Grande Farmers Market in summer 2024. She loves the connection brought by sharing bread with community members.
