Huichol Yarn Painting has a rich traditional history in Mexico dating back centuries. The Huichols are an indigenous people who mostly live in the mountainous areas of north central Mexico. Originally intended as ceremonial offerings to the Spirits to insure a bountiful harvest, these intricate and colorful yarn paintings continue today as a testament to the whole of their religious and cultural beliefs.
Hiroko Cannon has been painting seriously for more than 10 years, studying the plants and animals of the Plateau region while developing her style and technique. Informed by the simplicity of her Japanese aesthetic, this show will feature high quality reproductions using archival ink on cotton rag paper.
