Art Center East (ACE) is excited to announce the opening of Layers, an exhibit featuring the work of local artists Trevor Durr and Jennifer Durr, in ACE’s Main Gallery. The community is invited to attend a free opening reception with complimentary refreshments on Friday, May 6, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Raffle tickets for an original painting by Jennifer Durr will be available for purchase beginning at the opening reception through the exhibit’s closing reception on Friday, July 1. Layers will be on display May 6 – July 2.
As a believer in the power of catharsis and art therapy, Jennifer Durr literally layered on paint and mud for her series of works. “As humans, we are layered,” says Jennifer. “Life experiences, our perceptions, and the connections we make all create layers. As we age, I feel some layers are harder to reach, particularly unresolved trauma and conflict.”
Jennifer says that elements of play and empowerment present themselves in the act of making, while she piles up mounds of wet clay, gets covered in paint splashes, hand-mixes colors, and swirls palette knives on canvases. For her, paintings are created through emotional release.
Set amongst Jennifer’s playful paintings, visitors to the Main Gallery will find Trevor Durr’s photography and sculptural work. One series of sculptures is a collection of face masks retrieved from street gutters, parking lots, and sidewalks. Looking closely, viewers will discover that the tossed-away debris has been transformed. In his ceramic work, Trevor uses porcelain to strike a lighter tone about controversial topics, exploring their contradictions. He believes these topics deserve an exploration into deeper layers of discussion, not merely a “black-and-white thinking” approach.
Trevor and Jennifer Durr both hope their works will challenge viewers, encouraging them to engage in meaningful conversations within themselves and with each other. A closing reception for Layers will take place Friday, July 1, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. All are welcome at this free event. The raffle winner will be announced Saturday, July 2.

Registration cancellations & transfers must be made through Art Center East at (541) 624-2800 48 hours or more before the class start time. We cannot issue refunds or transfers for cancellations received after the 48-hour cutoff. Exceptions will be considered for medical or family emergencies. ACE will honor a refund, minus a $10 administration fee when the cancellation is made 48 hours or more before class start date. When a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will issue a refund for all registration fees. ACE will contact you in the event of a cancellation. Face coverings will be required in accordance with statewide regulations current at the time.
