July 12 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pmFree
This 100% hands-on and interactive drum class offered by West African Cultural Arts Institute is designed for teens and adults to learn to play polyrhythmic drumming from Guinea, West Africa. Lead by Alseny Yansane, an Oregon Folklife Traditional Artist, along with Andrea DiPalma Yansane and Papa Yansane of West African Cultural Arts Institute (WACAI) will lead participants in a “follow the leader” style class to teach basic hand drumming technique, corresponding drum arrangements, various accompaniment parts, and solo phrasing. Drums will be provided for up to 30 participants based on a first come, first serve basis. Recommended for ages 13+.
Drum class participants will have the opportunity to demonstrate what was learned in class during a short segment of WACAI’s community performance at the La Grande Farmers Market on Saturday, July 13th. Participation in the performance is completely optional.
No experience necessary. Free!
Pre-registration is necessary to reserve a drum for you to use during the workshop. If you have your own djembe drum or would like to attend as an observer, you do not need to r.s.v.p. for the class. All are welcome!
