Annual Open Exhibit at Art Center East Celebrates Community

LA GRANDE – The Big: Art Center East’s Annual Open Exhibit opens with a festive reception on December 6 from 6 – 8 pm. The exhibit fills both of Art Center East’s galleries with works in a wide range of artistic mediums submitted by regional artists. The Big will be on display from December 6 – January 25. Admission is free and open to the public.

The Big is a non-juried exhibit open to anyone who would like to participate. “We love this show because of the artists it brings out of the woodwork,” said Art Center East Director, Darcy Dolge. “We are lucky to live in a place with an active community of artists, both professional and amateur. We have artists that have been practicing their craft for years under the radar, artists that have been creating and displaying work for decades, and those that are just beginning to explore a new medium – all of which get to exhibit in The Big.”

All submissions are also eligible to win cash prizes awarded by the exhibit judge. This year’s judge is local glass artist Kevin Boylan, owner of the newly opened Birddog Glass studio in La Grande. Boylan has an art degree from Eastern Oregon University and worked with Tom Dimond in his Cove-based art glass studio for over fifteen years.

A final prize, People’s Choice, is selected by exhibit attendees throughout the run of the show and is awarded on January 25. Exhibit submissions have closed for the 2019 show. Artists can begin preparing work for 2020.

Visitors can expect a diverse selection of artwork, from ceramics, painting, mixed media, fiber arts, and photography to bronze and stained glass, two new mediums in this year’s show. Much of the work on display will be available for purchase.

The December 6 opening reception also includes a raffle, the fourth and final drawing of Art Center East’s Raffle Extravaganza. The raffle’s limited ticket system allows you to purchase tickets just for the prizes you’d like to win and includes items and experiences from local artists and businesses. Proceeds support free community programming at Art Center East.

The Big: Annual Open Exhibit is made possible in part by support from the Oregon Cultural Trust. Find out more about this event and others at artcentereast.org. Art Center East is located at 1006 Penn Avenue in La Grande. Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10am – 4pm, and Saturday Noon – 4pm.
