Comfort: the 5th Annual Fiber Arts & Jewelry Exhibit

February 5, 2021 - March 27, 2021

This annual exhibit creates a platform for an underrepresented branch of the visual arts while showcasing the breadth of talent within our local community of fiber and jewelry artists.

Each year, we choose a theme for artists to create toward. Living in a world that has been defined by uncertainty and danger for the past 10+ months, it seemed there was only one possible theme for this year’s exhibit.

The fiber arts have long been associated with the concept of comfort, but our COVID world certainly gives that relationship a new twist. As we all navigate the challenges of living through a global pandemic, the fiber and jewelry arts give many of us both a source and an outlet for comfort – finding comfort in process (the knitting that assuages your anxiety, the quilting that helps you express your emotions and wishes in color and shape), as well as in the products of that process (a blanket to wrap around your child, a necklace to dress up your work-from-home yoga pants & sweatshirt, face masks for family & friends or to donate to strangers, earrings to send to someone you haven’t been able to visit). We’ve asked our artists to use this medium to explore what has comforted them and/or how they have created comfort for others.

Art has the ability to make room for reflection, to guide our understanding, communicate, elaborate, and challenge. We hope this exhibit will be all of that, and most of all we hope it will provide a way for our community to share a part of their COVID experience, conjuring (if even for just a moment) the thing we’ve all looked for and longed for these long, lonely months: Comfort.
