Poetry of Science and Science in Poetry (Age 18+)

September 15, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

$10.00 – $12.00

September 15 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Poets and scientists both ask questions and try to understand the world around them. In fact, poets are scientists of the lyrical word! Participants in this workshop will read old and new science poems from poet William Carlos Williams to works by current poets.

Teaching Artist Amelia, a poet and author herself, will provide a presentation and handouts that encourage group discussion of how and why the language of poetry and science are so easily intertwined. This workshop can be a generative exercise for a different style of poetry, using science as the basis of exploration. Participants will write a science-based poem from selected writing prompts and take home “poem-starters” that they can develop on their own. Please bring a notebook and writing utensil. Please enter through the 5th Street door.
