Wild School Hibernation Celebration (AGES 6-12)

December 28 from 10:00 – 11:30 am

Enjoy the crisp winter air and learn art/culinary skills at the same time in this fun pop-up class at Pete’s Pond in La Grande! Students  will learn about hibernation and what animals at Pete’s Pond do in the winter through art and science, brewing pine needle tea, and doing some campfire cooking. Students gain knowledge of and appreciation for the natural world around them as well as learn skills and make new friends. Parents or guardians are not required to stay with their child for the duration of the class, but are welcome to do so.

Teaching Artists: Meghan Ballard & Amanda Welch

Meghan Ballard holds a B.S. in Environmental Science from Portland State University and has done graduate level coursework in Environmental Education. She has more than ten years of experience in environmental education engaging K-12 science classes in stream and wetland restoration projects. She is currently a freelance environmental educator, a Cub Scouts Den Leader, a board member of the Blue Mountains Conservancy, and a mother of two. 

Amanda Welch teaches art at Stella Mayfield Elementary School in Elgin, Oregon, and has a master’s degree in Arts Education. Although her main focus is fiber art, she spends a lot of time working with various mediums such as painting, photography and ceramics. She is also a mom of four and helps coach the La Grande Swim Club.
