Artist Talk with Berenice Chavez

November 1, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free

Join us online for a live artist talk and slideshow with photographer Berenice Chavez.

Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of life through the lens of loss. Berenice Chavez’s work mirrors this sentiment, exploring family, love, separation, and belonging with the photographs she takes of her undocumented family members.

“My family and I are characters that play a role in a story of undocumented immigrants in American society. I photograph my mother every time I visit home. The process of developing, proofing, editing and printing the photographs are a way for me to make up for the time I cannot be with her. The permanence of the image solidifies the life and identity my mother has made for herself in this country. For me, these photographs take the place of the legal citizenship that my mother does not have. They are proof that she belongs.”

In this online artist talk, Chavez will present a slideshow of her work, sharing some of the stories behind the photographs. Q & A will follow.

About Berenice: Chavez is a Mexican-born and American-raised photographer who received her Bachelor of Science in Art and Anthropology at Eastern Oregon University in 2019. Her work focuses on human behavior, family dynamics, and cultural identity. Chavez has been in multiple group exhibitions and her work has been published in Eastern Oregon University’s Oregon East Journal and Oregon Humanities Magazine. She was the recipient of the Joseph Dickerson Memorial Award at Eastern Oregon University’s Nightingale Gallery in 2018, and received Eastern Oregon University’s Outstanding Student of Art award in 2019.

Evento virtual
