Reading Aloud with Children (Ages 3-5)

Reading aloud with your children can be an exciting adventure when they lead the way through the story! In this literary and performing arts workshop, children guide their parents or guardians through short stories and help the adults understand what makes reading special. Adults will learn skills such as introducing a story to their young ones, letting their listener lead the reading, and engaging in thought-provoking conversations that broaden a child’s love of literacy and sharing time with family.
Children will learn skills such as breathing techniques, vocal variation, how to appropriately pause for a discussion, and how to build relationships with each reading. This fun workshop encourages all readers to continue exploring the literary and performing arts! A parent or guardian must stay with their child for the duration of the class.

Rikki Jo Hickey is a theatre artist who has taught theatrical classes, workshops, and summer camps to people of all ages for more than 20 years. She is the owner/instructor at mNemosyne Studios (theatrical and performing arts classes) in La Grande. Rikki holds an MFA in Theatre Direction from University of Hawai’i at Manoa and has studied theatre since she was five years old. She is excited to be partnering with Art Center East to help foster the performing arts in Eastern Oregon.

Registration cancellations & transfers must be made through Art Center East at (541) 624-2800 48 hours or more before the class start time. We cannot issue refunds or transfers for cancellations received after the 48-hour cutoff. Exceptions will be considered for medical or family emergencies. ACE will honor a refund, minus a $10 administration fee when the cancellation is made 48 hours or more before class start date. When a class is canceled due to low enrollment, we will issue a refund for all registration fees. ACE will contact you in the event of a cancellation. Face coverings will be required in accordance with statewide regulations current at the time.
