Practice Class! Simple Sauces

September 19, 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$10 – $13
Class will be conducted live via Zoom – Registered students will be emailed a link and class handouts on the day of class.
Help Art Center East prepare for online programming and enjoy a reduced-price class! We’ll use an online platform to create a hands-on learning experience in the comfort of your own kitchen. Sarah will cover how to make three sauces from scratch – bechamel, chimichurri, and vinaigrette – all while discussing how these versatile sauces can infuse your cooking with new flavors and inspiration. Grab some veggies at the farmers market that morning and you’ll be well on your way for a night or two of quick dinners with the prep you do in class!
Please note: Participants are responsible for all supplies, including a device that is compatible with Zoom and that you can have with you in your workspace (hands-free). See the full equipment and ingredient list below. The class handout and other resources will be shared digitally before class. Bring your questions about cooking, a sense of adventure, and a willingness to give thoughtful feedback – all participants will be expected to fill out an evaluation to help ACE develop other online classes.

Supply List:
Pantry Items:
Milk (whole milk or half-and-half are best)
Butter
All-Purpose Flour
Sugar or your preferred sweetener
Olive Oil
Vinegar (white wine, apple, champagne vinegars all work; white vinegar might be a little strong for our purposes)
Salt
Pepper
Fresh Garlic
Stone ground or Dijon mustard (optional)
Things you might need to buy:
Parsley (one large bunch or two small)
Lemon
Smoked Paprika (also called Spanish Paprika) or Sweet Paprika
Dried Oregano
Ground Cumin (about a tablespoon)
Ground Nutmeg
Chile Flakes
Extra Credit:
If you’d like to make a meal with any of these sauces, pick up some fresh veggies from the La Grande Farmers Market (or your garden) and Sarah will give you some ideas for how to dress them up for dinner!
*Nature’s Pantry is a good source for small amounts of spices, in case you need to purchase some and don’t want a whole jar. We’ll use no more than 2 tablespoons of any of the above spices.
Equipment to have on hand:
Small and medium mixing bowls
Whisk
Saute pan (a heavy-bottomed stainless steel 10- or 12-inch pan is ideal, but anything works!)
Cutting Board
Your favorite knife for chopping
Adequate lighting (so the instructor can see and assist your work)
